I saw a preview for 13 Reasons Why on Netflix in February. I knew wanted to watch it the minute it came out. What I didn't know, was that I could have read the book while I was waiting.
13 Reasons Why is a Young Adult Fiction book written by Jay Asher.
Clay starts out by telling us that he has received audio tapes. As the story continues we learn the tapes he has received are from Hannah Baker who has committed suicide. Hannah joins us to tell her story.
Suicide is a tough subject to talk about, especially when it comes to children/teens. Kudos to Jay Asher for tackling this subject. I love how he tells her story. What led up to her decision and how others affected her. The book also touches on other hard subjects and would be best for parents to preview before letting tweens/teens read. 13 Reasons Why brings bullying into a whole new light.
I liked this book a lot. I loved the way it was written, I felt I could be in both Clay and Hannah's minds at the same time. This made me feel part of the story. I did start the Netflix series before the book. I had stopped at Episode 4 to read the book and I am very happy I did. As with most made-into-TV/Movie books, it gave me so much more. I needed those little details.
My book rating is based off of this scale:
1 star: didn't like it
2 star: it was okay
3 star: liked it
4 star: really liked it
5 star: it was awesome
