My Review of Keeper by Amy Daws

In the opening chapter of Keeper we are introduced to Poppy and Booker. They are emailing back and forth when Poppy decides she is returning home to London. The banter between them is sweet and childlike, letting you into the friendship they had as children.

However, soon Booker will find out the Poppy he knew six years ago is most definitely not the same. As Poppy has changed appearance wise, her feelings for Booker hit her as soon as she sees him again. The love for him has returned, the love that she thought she had moved on from. The love that she had forgiven him for not returning. Except, she was wrong.

Booker doesn't "love" anyone but his family. He is a goal keeper and that is what he does. He protects what is important to him, as he does with Poppy. He keeps her in his sights, but has convinced himself that love only ends up in abandonment.

Poppy and Booker's story was an awesome read. I loved being able to read the story from both POVs, it made me feel like I was able to get to know both characters equally. In some books, you have a tendency to pick a side with a story like this. However, being able to get both sides feelings you just had this desire to root them both on, and maybe even head-thump each of them a time or two.

I know I will be going back to catch up on the rest of the Harris family, they are a riot. Cam and Tan are absolute nutballs and would make for a fun read!

Locking secret eyes with Belle, I quickly unwrap my purple ice treat and pop it in my mouth. I lean across the counter so I’m only a foot away from Booker, who’s now watching my lips. “So, Booker”—I suck hard and then take a nibble, my tongue swiping out to catch the syrupy liquid on my lips—“Do you know anyone who might be good for me?”

“Good for you for what?” Booker asks, his face devoid of any humour as he stares at my mouth with heat in his eyes.

“For a date. I thought maybe a teammate of yours might be good because they are familiar with Tower Park. They could show me around the stadium after the wedding. Give me a tour.” I wink.

His face turns red. “You’re not taking one of my fucking teammates to my brother’s wedding.”

“Why not?” I ask innocently and then plunge the lolly back in my mouth, going deeper this time.

He frowns as he watches my lips. “Because if you want a bloody tour of Tower Park, I can give you one.”

Rolling my eyes, I reply, “Fine, he doesn’t have to give me a tour. But I’m out of touch with people since I left, and you have a gaggle of teammates, Book. Surely you know someone who wouldn’t hate to spend the evening with me.”

“Roan DeWalt would be fun for her!” Vi interjects, snapping everyone’s attention to her as she whisks something in a bowl.

Tanner pipes up next. “Over my dead body he’s coming to my wedding. I’ve finally stopped wishing dismemberment on the prat.”

“It was only a suggestion!” Vi peals, looking perplexed. “It’s just that I set him up with our cousin Alice and she loved him! Roan is a South African dreamboat.” She waggles her eyebrows at me and I can’t help but smile.  

Suddenly, Booker stands, his stool screeching on the marble floor as he pushes it away. “Not Roan. Not any Bethnal players. None of them would work. You’re not their type.”

I hear Vi suck in a breath of air, and my cheeks heat with embarrassment. “Why not?” My jaw is tight with anger as my ice lolly drips, forgotten between my two fingers.

His fists clench on the counter. “Because I know you, Poppy. You’re not the kind of girl they’d go for.”

The way he’s acting gets right up my nose. I wanted to make him jealous, but that’s not what’s happening. He’s insinuating I’m not good enough for his mates, as if they’d never go for anyone like me. He doesn’t even know me as an adult. He’s pigeonholing me into the Poppy he thought he used to know. It’s complete and utter shit! “If you actually think I’m not good enough for your team—”

“They’re not good enough for you!” he shouts, interrupting me as he leans over the counter to get in my face. Booker eyes me hard, clearly not amused by my request. “No teammates, Pop. Not Roan. Not anyone. Got it?” His shoulders rise and fall as he pins me with the most aggressive face I’ve ever seen on him.

I can tell the moment he snaps out of it because his neck turns red and he looks around at his family, who are all staring at us with their mouths open. He shoves two hands through his hair as he turns on his heel and strides out the back door and into the garden.

It’s quiet in the kitchen as everyone sits there gobsmacked.  

“Wrong button,” Tanner quips and Belle elbows him in the ribs. I turn my red face to look at her and she nods with reassurance.

“I hope you girls know what you’re doing,” Vi says. Then she wipes her hands off and tosses the tea towel in front of me as she scurries out after Booker.

I loved Slam.  I was introduced to Andee Michelle through another author, but hadn't been able to check out any of her work.  I am in love with her writing.  I am not a huge baseball fan, but I liked the way it was written into Bryant and Layne's story.  Gracie was adorable, and Mandy and Conor were hilarious.  I loved that there were some minor twists that helped keep the story flowing.  Slam earned 5 stars for being a nice and easy read.  

Although Andee grew up a military brat and traveled the world with her family, she has made her home in southwest Idaho with her husband and two sons. Working in the legal field, shuttling her boys around, chasing her two crazy dogs and reigning in her adrenaline junky husband keeps her busy. She has always had a passion for reading and writing, even as a child. Andee loves a great glass of wine, reading late into the night, and spending time in the mountains with her family and friends.

MY REVIEW:

As the noted in the synopsis, you must read No Holds first, otherwise you will be lost and have no clue what you are reading.

Ryker and Whitney are leading up to the last fight before Ryker gets his second chance at going pro.  Nothing can go wrong or he's out.  Until something does go wrong?  In one decision will Whitney and Ryker lose everything?

I loved that we got to finally get a real feel for Candice, she was a comical addition to No Hesitations.  I also found myself in Whitney's shoes when it came to Carter.  He really deserved everything that came to him.

I guess as in the story of life, you never know who really is your friend or has respect for you until you have losing everything that matters.  There are friendships made, relationships broken, deceit, and heartbreak.  There is also love, silver linings, and new beginnings.

I loved that there was more MMA action in No Hesitations, it kind of helped me understand what went into Ryker and his personality.  Also, the war Ryker created within himself made a lot more sense.  He loves and is caring with Whitney, but you can't be that way in the ring.

There was absolutely nothing more I wanted out of No Hesitations, this book earned a 5 star review!  I'm glad that I followed Ryker and Whitney's journey.

MY REVIEW:

Not only was this the first book by TC Matson I had read, it was also the first MMA in the sports romance genre.  I know absolutely NOTHING about MMA, so I was for sure going into this blind.  I did read No Holds as a standalone even though there are 3 other books in the series.

Whitney and Ryker's paths cross during an anniversary party Whitney had been hired to plan by Ryker's brother Jackson.  While a brief encounter, their paths crossed again soon after.  

In the story, Whitney has strong feelings about fighting/violence, at one point her father is brought in.  I thought maybe they would elaborate more on her reasoning, but it was just kind of left as a moral belief.  As silly as it may seem, I would have liked a story to go along with that.  

We are introduced to the Hayes family, who are very close knit.  The supporting characters are all fantastic and bring the story together.  

I expected a little more of the MMA scenes to play out in No Holds.  I know we were leading up to Ryker working for his second chance, so I am sure that is why there weren't more scenes like that.  

Overall, I liked No Holds, for being the first MMA in the sports genre that I had read.  I found myself reading to dive into No Hesitations to find out what happened with Ryker's career and Whitney and Ryker's relationship.  I am giving No Holds 4 stars.  I needed just a bit more history on Whitney and a little bit more of the MMA to understand Ryker.
